Are Doritos Vegan? Every Flavor Checked (US, UK and Ireland)

Only a few Doritos are vegan. In the US, Toasted Corn contains just corn, oil and salt, and Spicy Sweet Chili has no animal ingredients listed. The big sellers (Nacho Cheese, Cool Ranch and Flamin' Hot Nacho) all contain milk, and Salsa Verde contains chicken flavor. In the UK and Ireland, Chilli Heatwave and Lightly Salted have no milk ingredients.

Doritos are a mixed bag. The plain corn chip is vegan, but most of the famous flavors get their kick from cheese powder and dairy seasoning. The US and the UK/Irish ranges are also quite different, so we've split them out below.

UK flavors come and go, and recipes are updated, so treat this as a starting point and confirm on the bag. UK Doritos packs carry a "made in a factory that also handles milk" warning, which is about cross-contact rather than ingredients.

Why so many Doritos contain milk

Flavored chips are seasoned with a powder, and dairy is a cheap way to make that powder creamy and savory, and to help it cling to the chip. Whey, buttermilk, lactose and cheese turn up in most "cheesy", "ranch" and "creamy" flavors. If a chip's flavor name doesn't mention cheese, still check: Cool Ranch has five dairy ingredients, and Hint of Lime and Flame Grilled Steak both contain milk.

Dairy words to look for

Milk, milk powder, skim milk, whey, whey protein, buttermilk, cream, sour cream, lactose, cheese, sodium caseinate and milk protein concentrate all mean the chips aren't vegan.

Doritos and sugar

Some Doritos contain sugar. Frito-Lay has said it doesn't track whether its sugar was processed with bone char, because processing aids aren't part of ingredient information. Most vegans don't worry about it. More on sugar.

Are Doritos vegetarian?

Most are. The exceptions are flavors with real meat-derived flavoring, such as US Salsa Verde (chicken flavor), and cheese flavors where the cheese may be made with animal rennet. UK flavors named after meat, like Flame Grilled Steak, are flavored without meat but still contain milk.

Vegan alternatives

If you want a cheesy tortilla chip, several smaller brands make vegan "nacho cheese" chips flavored with nutritional yeast. Plain tortilla chips from most supermarkets are vegan, and they're perfect with fresh pico de gallo. For other crisps, see are Pringles vegan.

Toasted Corn or Lightly Salted Doritos are good with fresh pico de gallo or crumbled over smoky lentil tacos.

The bottom line

In the US, stick to Toasted Corn or Spicy Sweet Chili. In the UK and Ireland, Lightly Salted and Chilli Heatwave are the vegan bags. Everything cheesy, creamy or ranch-flavored contains milk.
