Froot Loops aren't vegan. There's no milk, egg or honey in them, but they're fortified with vitamin D3, which is typically made from lanolin in sheep's wool.
Everything else is plant-based or synthetic. Some vegans accept trace vitamin D3.
Froot Loops are colorful, fruity and contain no milk or honey, so they look like they should be vegan. Like most big-brand US cereals, though, they're fortified with vitamin D3, which is almost always made from sheep's wool.
Froot Loops ingredients explained
US Froot Loops are made from a corn, wheat and oat flour blend, sugar, oil and starch, with natural fruit flavors, colors and added vitamins and minerals.
| Ingredient | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Corn flour blend, wheat flour, whole grain oat flour | Vegan | Contains gluten. |
| Sugar | Grey area | US cane sugar may be filtered with bone char. |
| Vegetable oil | Vegan | |
| Modified food starch, oat fiber, salt | Vegan | |
| Natural fruit flavors | Vegan | |
| Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1, Yellow 6 | Vegan | Synthetic dyes, being phased out. Some vegans avoid them because of animal testing. |
| Iron, niacinamide, B vitamins, vitamin C | Vegan | Synthetic. |
| Vitamin D3 | Not vegan | Usually made from lanolin (sheep's wool grease). |
Froot Loops varieties
| Variety | Status | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Original Froot Loops | Not vegan | Vitamin D3. |
| Froot Loops with Marshmallows | Not vegan | Gelatin in the marshmallows, plus vitamin D3. |
| Limited editions and Froot Loops Jumbo Snax | Check the label | Vitamin D3, gelatin and glazes. |
| Froot Loops cereal bars | Check the label | Bars often add milk ingredients. |
The artificial dye changes
In August 2025, WK Kellogg said it would stop using artificial (FD&C) dyes in its cereals by the end of 2027, with no new products using them from January 2026. Froot Loops are one of the cereals affected. Versions sold in Europe already use fruit- and plant-based colors.
The colors were never the reason Froot Loops weren't vegan, so this won't change our verdict unless the vitamin D3 changes too.
Froot Loops vs Apple Jacks
Apple Jacks are the closest relative: same maker, similar flour blend, same vitamin D3. Neither is vegan for the same single reason.
Froot Loops in Ireland and the UK
Froot Loops have mostly been sold here as US imports, which follow the US recipe, including vitamin D3. A European recipe with natural colors has been reported for EU markets. Whichever box you find, check the vitamins at the end of the ingredients for D3 or "vitamin D".
Vegan alternatives to Froot Loops
Look for organic fruity O's from store and organic brands that aren't fortified, and check there's no vitamin D3, gelatin or honey. See the vegan cereal list for options.
The bottom line
Froot Loops are plant-based except for one ingredient: vitamin D3. If you're strict about animal-derived ingredients, choose an unfortified fruity cereal instead.
