Are Oreos Vegan?

THE VERDICTVegan recipe, may contain milk

Classic Oreos are vegan by ingredients. The cookies and creme filling contain no milk, eggs or other animal ingredients in the US, UK and Ireland. Mondelez doesn't call them vegan, because they're made on shared equipment and may contain traces of milk.

Fudge-coated Oreos, Cakesters and chocolate-covered Oreos contain milk.

Oreos are the classic "accidentally vegan" cookie. The chocolate cookies and the white creme filling contain no milk or eggs. But Mondelez, which makes them, doesn't call them vegan, and that's where the confusion comes from.

Oreo ingredients explained

A standard Oreo is made from wheat flour, sugar, palm and/or canola oil, cocoa, invert sugar or glucose syrup, leavening (baking soda), cornstarch, salt, soy lecithin and flavoring. Recipes differ slightly between the US and Europe, but neither lists milk or egg.

Ingredient Status Why
Wheat flour Vegan Contains gluten.
Sugar Grey area US cane sugar may be filtered with bone char.
Palm and/or canola oil Vegan Plant-based. Some vegans avoid palm oil for environmental reasons.
Cocoa (processed with alkali) Vegan
Invert sugar, glucose syrup Vegan
Leavening, cornstarch, salt Vegan
Soy lecithin Vegan Plant-based emulsifier.
Vanillin or flavoring Vegan Usually synthetic.

The "creme" is a sweet vegetable-fat filling. It contains no cream.

Why Mondelez won't call Oreos vegan

Mondelez has said that many Oreo products are suitable for vegans but may contain cross-contaminants of milk, so people should check the allergen advice. Oreos are made in factories that also produce products with milk, so traces can't be ruled out, and the pack carries a "may contain milk" warning.

That warning is about allergies. It doesn't mean milk is used in the recipe. Most vegans eat products with may-contain warnings, because avoiding them doesn't reduce the use of animal products. If you have a milk allergy, though, treat Oreos as unsafe.

Oreos in Ireland and the UK

Standard UK Oreos are vegan by ingredients too, including Original, Golden, Double Cream, Chocolate Cream and Oreo Thins. UK packs list milk in bold in the ingredients when it's an ingredient, and in a separate "may contain" line when it's a cross-contact risk, which makes it quick to tell the two apart.

How to make vegan Oreo desserts

Oreos are a useful vegan baking ingredient:

  • Crush them with melted vegan butter for a cheesecake base.
  • Fold crushed Oreos into vegan vanilla ice cream.
  • Blend with oat milk and vegan ice cream for an Oreo shake.
  • Dip them in melted dark chocolate that's dairy-free.

Similar vegan cookies

Back to Nature makes a plant-based cookie range, and many supermarket own-brand chocolate sandwich cookies are vegan by ingredients. Check for milk, butter and whey.

The bottom line

Classic Oreos are vegan by ingredients in the US, UK and Ireland. Mondelez won't label them vegan because of possible milk traces. That's a decision for you, but by our standard they're vegan. Skip anything fudge-coated or Cakesters.
