Chipotle is one of the best fast-food chains for vegans. The Sofritas (braised tofu), both beans, both rices, fajita veggies, every regular salsa, guacamole, chips and tortillas are vegan. Chipotle itself says vegans only need to avoid the meats, cheese, queso, sour cream and chipotle-honey vinaigrette.
The Cilantro Lime Sauce added in 2026 contains sour cream, so it isn't vegan.
Chipotle is about as easy as fast food gets for vegans. It has a real plant-based protein on the regular menu, and nearly every other ingredient on the line is vegan. Chipotle even spells it out: vegans should avoid the meats, the shredded cheese, the queso, the sour cream and the chipotle-honey vinaigrette. That's the whole list, plus one new sauce. We checked Chipotle's US and UK allergen information in October 2026.

Limited-time salsas and sides come and go. VegNews lists the red chimichurri as vegan, for example, but always check a new item on Chipotle's allergen page, because Chipotle warns that limited-time items may contain allergens not on its standard chart.
How to build a vegan bowl or burrito
The line moves fast, so it helps to know your order before you reach the front.
- Choose the format. Burrito, bowl, salad, tacos, or a bowl with tortillas on the side. Skip the quesadilla, which is built around cheese.
- Rice. White or brown, or half and half.
- Beans. Black, pinto, or both.
- Protein. Sofritas, or ask for veggies (fajita peppers and onions). In the US, choosing veggies gets you guacamole at no extra charge.
- Salsas. As many as you like. Fresh tomato and roasted chili-corn are a great pair.
- Finish. Lettuce and guacamole. Say "no cheese, no sour cream, no queso" before they reach for them.
Our go-to order: a bowl with white rice, black beans, Sofritas, fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa, roasted chili-corn salsa, lettuce and guac, plus a side of chips with tomatillo-red chili salsa.
On a salad: use salsa and guacamole as the dressing. The vinaigrette has honey.
What is Sofritas?
Sofritas is Chipotle's tofu filling: tofu that's shredded and braised with chilies and spices, so it comes out smoky and a little spicy. VegNews reports it's made with tofu from Hodo, a California tofu maker. It's on the regular menu, not a limited-time item, and you can add it to any burrito, bowl, salad or tacos. A double portion costs extra.
If you've never tried it, a half-and-half order works well: ask for Sofritas plus fajita veggies, and you'll get both.
Ordering tips
- Say the "no" items early. Cheese, sour cream and queso come near the end of the line, right after the salsas. Tell them "no cheese, no sour cream" as you choose your salsas, so nobody reaches for the cheese out of habit.
- Go veggie for free guac. In the US, choosing fajita veggies as your filling gets you guacamole at no extra charge, which makes it the best-value vegan order.
- Tacos without the quesadilla trap. Ask for a bowl with three tortillas on the side and build your own tacos.
- Online orders let you tick and untick everything, which is the most reliable way to keep the cheese off.
- Chips and guac is vegan as is, and a good sharer.
Ready-made vegan bowls
Chipotle added two vegan "Lifestyle Bowls" to digital ordering in 2023:
| Bowl | Status | What's in it |
|---|---|---|
| Plant Powered Bowl | Vegan | Supergreens, white rice, Sofritas, fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa, roasted chili-corn salsa, guacamole. |
| Veggie Full Bowl | Vegan | White rice, black beans, fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa, roasted chili-corn salsa, guacamole. |
They're only available in the app and online, and the lineup changes, so check the app before relying on them.
What's not vegan at Chipotle
- All meats, including limited-time proteins such as Chicken al Pastor (back in 2026) and, in the UK, Chipotle Honey Chicken.
- Shredded cheese, queso blanco and sour cream.
- The chipotle-honey vinaigrette.
- The Cilantro Lime Sauce.
- Quesadillas, which are filled with cheese.
Cross-contact and allergies
Chipotle says ingredients can touch each other during preparation, and that's not reflected in its allergen chart. If cross-contact matters to you, ask the team member to change gloves before making your order. It doesn't change our verdict.
For gluten: bowls, salads and tacos made with corn tortillas avoid the flour tortilla, which contains wheat. Chipotle notes its corn products may contain trace gluten from crops grown near wheat. Sofritas contains soy.
Chipotle in the UK (and why not Ireland)
Chipotle has restaurants in the UK, France and Germany in Europe, but none in Ireland. The UK menu is a little smaller, and the vegan picture is almost identical. Chipotle UK's allergen guide carries the same advice word for word: vegans should avoid the meats, cheese, queso, sour cream and chipotle-honey vinaigrette.
| UK item | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sofritas | Vegan | Contains soya. |
| Black and pinto beans | Vegan | |
| White and brown rice | Vegan | |
| Fresh tomato salsa, chilli-corn salsa | Vegan | |
| Roasted tomato green-chilli and red-chilli salsas | Vegan | |
| Guacamole | Vegan | |
| Flour tortilla, tortilla chips | Vegan | Tortilla contains wheat. |
| Cheese, queso, sour cream | Not vegan | Dairy. |
| Chipotle-honey vinaigrette | Not vegan | Honey. |
In the UK, staff will change gloves and wash their hands for a gluten-free order if you ask, which is also a handy way to reduce cross-contact.
Make it at home
Chipotle's fresh tomato salsa is a simple pico de gallo. Our pico de gallo recipe gets you close, and it's the right thing to spoon over a homemade burrito bowl.
Chipotle vs other chains
| Chain | Vegan protein? | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Chipotle | Sofritas (tofu) | Yes, one of the easiest |
| Taco Bell | Beans and potatoes | Yes, with swaps |
| Subway | Veggie Patty at some US locations | Check the bread and sauce |
| Panera | Mediterranean Veggie without feta | Yes, with swaps |
The bottom line
Order Sofritas or veggies, add rice, beans, salsa and guac, and you've got a filling vegan meal with no special requests beyond "no cheese, no sour cream". The only traps are the vinaigrette and the new Cilantro Lime Sauce. In the UK it's the same story; in Ireland, you'll have to make your own. See the vegan fast food guide for more chains.
