Taco Bell is one of the easiest fast-food chains for vegans. The beans, rice, potatoes, guacamole, shells, tortillas and hot sauce packets are certified vegan by the American Vegetarian Association. Swap meat for beans and order 'fresco style' to remove the cheese, sour cream and creamy sauces.
There's no plant-based meat on the US menu right now, and some restaurants share fryer oil with meat items.
Taco Bell is the fast-food chain vegans quietly love. Beans, rice, potatoes, guacamole and almost every shell and tortilla are free of animal ingredients, and one magic phrase, "fresco style", strips the dairy off most of the menu. There's no plant-based meat in the US right now, but you don't really need it. We checked Taco Bell's own certified-vegan ingredient list in October 2026; here's how to use it.
Taco Bell's vegan certification, explained
Taco Bell has worked with the American Vegetarian Association (AVA) since 2015 and was the first quick-service chain to do so. Two things to know:
- The AVA certifies Taco Bell's vegetarian menu as lacto-ovo, so "AVA-certified" alone doesn't mean vegan. The Cheese Quesadilla is AVA-certified too.
- Within that list, Taco Bell marks a smaller set of ingredients as certified vegan. Those are your building blocks.

What "fresco style" does
Ordering "fresco style" removes cheese, nacho cheese sauce, sour cream and mayo-based sauces and adds pico de gallo instead. It costs nothing extra.
For a while the option disappeared from the app after an update, so you had to ask at the counter. On 12 October 2026 Taco Bell added "Make It Fresco" back to the app and website, which makes vegan ordering much easier. Fresco doesn't touch the meat, so you still need to swap that for beans or potatoes yourself.
The best vegan orders at Taco Bell
| Order | Status | How to order it |
|---|---|---|
| Bean Burrito | With swaps | Fresco style, or "no cheese". Add potatoes or guac. |
| Black Bean Crunchwrap Supreme | With swaps | No nacho cheese, no sour cream. Add guac and potatoes. |
| Black Bean Chalupa Supreme | With swaps | No sour cream, no cheese. The chalupa shell is vegan. |
| Veggie Bowl | With swaps | No cheese, no sour cream, no avocado ranch. |
| Spicy Potato Soft Taco | With swaps | No cheese, no chipotle sauce. Add red sauce or a hot sauce packet. |
| Crunchy or soft taco | With swaps | Beans instead of beef, fresco style. |
| Veggie Mexican Pizza | With swaps | No cheese. VegNews lists it as vegan this way; ask for red sauce if you want to stick to certified-vegan sauces. |
| Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes | With swaps | No nacho cheese, no sour cream. Add guac. |
| Pintos N Cheese | With swaps | No cheese: refried beans, red sauce and onions. |
| Black Beans and Rice | Vegan | As it comes. |
| Chips and Guacamole | Vegan | As it comes. |
| Cinnamon Twists | Vegan | As it comes. |
How to build your own vegan order
- Pick a base. Bean Burrito, Crunchwrap, chalupa, taco or bowl.
- Swap the protein. Black beans, refried beans or potato bites instead of meat.
- Make it fresco. Or remove cheese, sour cream and creamy sauces one by one.
- Add flavor back. Guacamole, red sauce, jalapeños, pico and a few Fire or Diablo packets.
- Order in the app. It's easier to get modifications right than at the drive-thru speaker, and you can check every ingredient before you pay.
A favorite: a Black Bean Crunchwrap Supreme with no nacho cheese and no sour cream, add potatoes and guac, with a side of Cinnamon Twists.
Breakfast and drinks
Taco Bell's breakfast menu is built around eggs, cheese and meat, so most of it is off the table. Two certified-vegan items help: the hash brown and the breakfast salsa. A hash brown with a couple of hot sauce packets is a perfectly respectable snack. For anything more filling at breakfast time, order from the regular menu if your store serves it.
Fountain sodas and iced tea are fine. VegNews suggests checking the ingredients of the frozen Freeze drinks before ordering.
Drive-thru tips
- Say "fresco style" and "beans instead of beef" at the start of each item, not at the end.
- List the removals for anything with a creamy sauce: "no sour cream, no nacho cheese, no chipotle sauce".
- Check the bag before you drive off. Cheese is the most common slip, and it's easy to spot.
- Order in the app if you can. You'll see every ingredient and can remove them one by one.
Fryers and cross-contact
Taco Bell says some restaurants use the same frying oil for items with and without animal ingredients, and that it can't guarantee against cross-contact with meat. That affects potato bites, hash browns, shells, chips and Cinnamon Twists. It doesn't change our verdict, but it's worth knowing if it matters to you.
Taco Bell in the UK and Ireland
UK. In July 2023 Taco Bell UK added a pea-based "plant protein" to all its UK restaurants, and said you could swap it for the meat in any item, including the Crunchwrap Supreme and Crunchy Taco, at no extra charge. You still need to remove the cheese and sour cream. Menus change, so check the app or ask whether your restaurant still offers it.
Ireland. Ireland's first Taco Bell opened in 2025 at Applegreen's Junction 6 services on the M3 in Dunshaughlin, Co Meath, with more Applegreen sites planned. We couldn't find a published vegan guide or allergen list for the Irish menu, so ask staff for the allergen information before ordering, and don't assume the US certified-vegan list applies.
Vegetarian, gluten and allergy notes
Vegetarians have it easiest: the AVA certification covers the whole vegetarian menu, cheese included. Flour tortillas contain wheat, and kitchens are shared, so check Taco Bell's allergen information if you need to avoid gluten, soy or anything else.
Taco Bell vs other chains
| Chain | Vegan protein? | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Taco Bell | Beans and potatoes | Yes, with swaps |
| Chipotle | Sofritas (tofu) | One of the best |
| Subway | Veggie Patty at some locations | Check the bread and sauce |
| Burger King | Impossible Whopper, no mayo | One of the better burger chains |
The bottom line
Order fresco style, swap meat for beans or potatoes, add guacamole and hot sauce, and Taco Bell is a cheap, filling vegan stop. Skip anything with cheese, sour cream or a creamy sauce, plus the Doritos Locos shell and Cinnabon Delights. For more chains, see the vegan fast food guide.
