Vegan Options at Five Guys

THE VERDICTGreat fries, no vegan bun

Five Guys is a fries stop for vegans. The fries, regular or Cajun, are just potatoes, peanut oil and salt. The bun contains milk and egg in the US, UK and Ireland, so the only vegan sandwich is the Veggie Sandwich in a lettuce wrap.

The mayo contains egg, and there are no vegan milkshakes. The grilled veg share the flat-top with the beef.

Five Guys makes some of the best fries in fast food, and they're vegan. The rest of the menu is harder. There's no plant-based patty, and the bun contains milk and egg on both sides of the Atlantic. That leaves a lettuce-wrapped Veggie Sandwich and a big bag of fries. We checked the US menu and the latest UK and Irish allergen guides in October 2026.

Are Five Guys fries vegan?

Yes. Five Guys fries are fresh-cut potatoes cooked in peanut oil with salt. The UK allergen guide lists exactly those three ingredients, and US guides say the same.

Cajun fries add a seasoning made from garlic, salt, onion, paprika, oregano, white pepper, cayenne and celery seed. All vegan. In the UK and Ireland, celery is flagged as an allergen in the seasoning.

Portions are famously generous, and staff often tip an extra scoop into the bag. A regular portion is plenty for two.

If you're a big peanut fan, the free in-shell peanuts at many locations are also vegan. See our page on peanuts for more.

Is the Five Guys bun vegan?

No, and this is the main problem. The US bun contains milk and egg. The UK and Irish allergen guide lists wheat, milk, egg, sesame and soya for the burger bun, and milk, egg, wheat and soya for the hot dog bun. There's no vegan bun on either menu, and the UK guide lists no gluten-free bun either.

That means every sandwich and burger on the board is out unless you swap the bun for lettuce.

How to order a vegan Veggie Sandwich

The Veggie Sandwich is grilled onions and mushrooms with your choice of fresh toppings, normally served in a bun. To make it vegan:

  1. Ask for it in a lettuce wrap. Five Guys wraps it in big iceberg leaves instead of the bun.
  2. No cheese, and check you're not getting the "cheese veggie sandwich".
  3. No mayo.
  4. Load up on toppings. Toppings are free, so ask for everything vegan: lettuce, tomato, pickles, raw or grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, green peppers and jalapeños.
  5. Add sauce: ketchup, mustard, relish, BBQ, hot sauce or (in the US) A.1.

What to say: "A Veggie Sandwich in a lettuce wrap, no cheese, no mayo, with grilled onions, mushrooms, green peppers, jalapeños, tomato, pickles and BBQ sauce, please."

It won't fill you up on its own. Pair it with fries.

The grilled onions and mushrooms go on the same flat-top as the beef patties. Chowhound reports that some locations will clean a section of the grill if you ask. If that matters to you, stick to raw toppings.

Milkshakes

Five Guys milkshakes are a big draw, but none are vegan. The shake base is dairy, and whipped cream is dairy too. Some of the mix-ins, like banana, strawberry and (in the UK) mango, are vegan on their own, but they all go into the dairy base. There's no plant-based shake in the US, UK or Ireland.

Five Guys in the UK and Ireland

Five Guys has a big presence in the UK and also trades in Ireland, including in Dublin. Based on Five Guys' UK and European allergen guides, the vegan picture is almost identical to the US:

  • Fries: vegan. Potatoes, peanut oil and salt, per the UK allergen guide. Cajun fries are vegan too.
  • Buns: not vegan. Milk, egg, sesame, soya and wheat.
  • Veggie Sandwich: listed with the bun, so not vegan as standard. Ask for a lettuce wrap, which is on the UK allergen guide as an option.
  • Sauces: ketchup, mustard, relish, BBQ, hot sauce and HP Brown Sauce have no animal ingredients listed. The mayo contains egg.
  • Loaded fries: not vegan. They come with cheese sauce and an egg-based fry sauce.
  • Milkshakes: dairy base. No vegan option.

The UK guide carries a strong warning that there's always a risk of cross-contamination. That's an allergy note, not a reason the fries aren't vegan.

Cross-contact and allergy notes

  • Peanuts: fries are cooked in peanut oil, and many restaurants have open boxes of peanuts. If you have a peanut allergy, speak to staff before ordering.
  • Shared grill: veggie toppings share the flat-top with beef.
  • Gluten: fries contain no wheat by ingredients, but kitchens are shared.
  • Celery and mustard: flagged in the UK guide for the Cajun seasoning, ketchup, mustard and BBQ sauce.

How Five Guys compares with other burger chains

Chain Vegan burger? Vegan fries? Our verdict
Five Guys Veggie Sandwich in lettuce only Yes Great fries, no vegan bun
In-N-Out Wish Burger (bun and veg) Yes Fries and a Wish Burger
Burger King Impossible Whopper, no mayo Yes One of the better burger chains
McDonald's No (US); McPlant (UK, Ireland) No in the US; yes in UK and Ireland Varies by country

The bottom line

Go to Five Guys for the fries. Cajun fries with ketchup and hot sauce make a great snack, and a lettuce-wrapped Veggie Sandwich loaded with grilled onions, mushrooms and peppers rounds it out. If you want a vegan burger in a bun, Burger King in the US or McDonald's in the UK and Ireland will serve you better. For more chains, see our vegan fast food guide.
