Coca-Cola is vegan. The company says Coke contains no ingredients derived from animal sources and can be part of a vegan diet. The same goes for Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, Cherry Coke, Fanta Orange and Sprite. The only grey areas are cane sugar in some US bottles and the company's history with animal testing.
A few drinks elsewhere in the Coca-Cola Company's range have used honey, fish gelatin or lanolin-based vitamin D. Check the label on anything beyond the core sodas.
Good news for anyone who just wants a cold Coke with their fries: Coca-Cola is vegan. The company says so directly, and the ingredient list backs it up. The questions vegans actually ask are about the odd-sounding bits (caramel color, natural flavors), the sugar, and whether a company this big has a clean record on animal testing.
What's in a can of Coke?
US Coca-Cola has six ingredients. UK and Irish Coke has five, because it uses sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and lists caffeine within the flavorings.
| Ingredient | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Carbonated water | Vegan | |
| High fructose corn syrup (US) | Vegan | Made from corn starch. No bone char involved. |
| Sugar (UK, Ireland, US cane-sugar bottles) | Grey area | UK and Irish sugar isn't filtered with bone char. US cane sugar can be. |
| Caramel color (E150d) | Vegan | Made by heating sugars. No dairy. |
| Phosphoric acid | Vegan | Gives Coke its tang. |
| Natural flavors | Vegan | Secret recipe, but Coca-Cola says nothing in Coke is animal-derived. |
| Caffeine | Vegan |
Coca-Cola's own FAQ puts it plainly: Coke "does not contain any ingredients derived from animal sources and can be included in a vegetarian or vegan diet." In the UK and Ireland, supermarkets such as Tesco mark Coca-Cola Original Taste as suitable for vegans.
Caramel color, explained
Caramel color sounds like it might involve butter or cream. It doesn't. It's made by heating sugars, sometimes with food-grade acids, alkalis or salts, until they turn dark brown. On UK and Irish cans you'll see it as "Colour (Caramel E150d)." It's vegan.
Natural flavors, explained
"Natural flavors" can legally come from animal sources in the US, which is why we usually mark them as likely vegan rather than vegan. Coke is the exception where the brand has stated that none of its ingredients are animal-derived, so we're happy to call the flavors vegan here. Coca-Cola doesn't reveal the actual recipe, and it isn't going to start for us.
Which Coca-Cola drinks are vegan?
We checked the core sodas sold in the US, UK and Ireland. Recipes change, so check limited editions.
| Drink | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coca-Cola (Classic / Original Taste) | Vegan | Confirmed by Coca-Cola. |
| Diet Coke | Vegan | Sweetened with aspartame. |
| Coca-Cola Zero Sugar | Vegan | On Coca-Cola's own vegan list. |
| Caffeine-free Coke and Diet Coke | Vegan | Same recipe, minus caffeine. |
| Cherry Coke and Vanilla Coke | Vegan | Flavor variants of the same base. |
| US Coca-Cola made with cane sugar (glass bottle) | Grey area | Vegan by ingredients; the cane sugar may be bone-char filtered. |
| Fanta Orange (US) | Vegan | HFCS, natural flavors and the dyes Yellow 6 and Red 40. |
| Fanta Orange and Fanta Zero (UK and Ireland) | Vegan | Colored with carotenes. Tesco labels Fanta Zero vegan. |
| Sprite and Sprite Zero | Vegan | Sprite is on Coca-Cola's own vegan list; Sprite Zero has no animal ingredients either. |
| Limited-edition and "creations" flavors | Check the label | Usually fine, but we haven't checked every one. |
| Other drinks owned by Coca-Cola | Check the label | See below. |
The rest of the Coca-Cola Company
Coca-Cola owns far more than Coke. In 2019 and 2020, Coca-Cola told the UK site Vegan Friendly that a few of its UK drinks weren't vegan: some used fish gelatin to carry beta-carotene coloring, one Honest drink contained honey, and some vitaminwater Zero versions used vitamin D that may come from lanolin (see vitamin D3). Some of those drinks have since changed or left shelves, so treat that as a reason to read labels, not a current list. In the US, the company also owns the dairy brand fairlife, which obviously isn't vegan.
US vs UK and Ireland
The biggest difference is the sweetener.
- US Coke uses high fructose corn syrup. HFCS is made from corn and doesn't go anywhere near bone char, so the regular US can is arguably the most straightforward Coke for strict vegans.
- UK and Irish Coke uses sugar. Sugar refined in the UK and Ireland isn't filtered with bone char, so there's no grey area here either.
- US cane-sugar Coke. In October 2025 Coca-Cola started a measured US rollout of a cane-sugar version in 12-ounce glass bottles, sold alongside the regular HFCS version. "Mexican Coke" imports also use cane sugar. Some US cane sugar is whitened with bone char, and labels don't say which refinery supplied it. We treat this as a grey area, not a reason to call the drink non-vegan.
Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar and the zero-sugar Fantas and Sprites skip sugar entirely, so the sugar question doesn't apply to them on either side of the Atlantic.
Does Coca-Cola test on animals?
This is where some vegans hesitate. Ingredients are one thing; how a company behaves is another.
In 2007, Coca-Cola told PETA it would no longer fund or conduct animal experiments. It said it doesn't conduct or directly fund animal tests for its beverages and asked its research partners to use alternatives. In November 2024, PETA reported that Coca-Cola withdrew its sponsorship of a University of Wisconsin food research institute after PETA said the donations were funding animal experiments.
So the company has a stated policy against testing its drinks on animals, and it has acted on pressure from campaigners. Some sweeteners and dyes used across the soft-drink industry were safety-tested on animals at some point, often decades ago, which is why some vegans avoid them. Most vegans don't avoid Coke for that reason, but it's your call. Our vegan vs cruelty-free guide explains the difference.
How to check a Coca-Cola drink
- Start with the brand. Core Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, Fanta Orange and Sprite are all vegan.
- Read the coloring on anything orange, red or yellow. "Beta-carotene" or "carotenes" are fine on their own, but a carrier can occasionally be animal-derived. Look for a vegan mark, or check the brand's FAQ.
- Watch for added vitamins. Vitamin waters and fortified drinks may use vitamin D3, which is usually made from sheep's wool.
- Look for honey and milk. They turn up in teas, coffees and "smoothie-style" drinks more than in sodas.
- In the UK and Ireland, supermarket listings often say "Suitable for vegans" under dietary information, which saves time.
Coke at restaurants
Fountain Coke is the same product from syrup, so it's vegan too. Drink choices at chains such as McDonald's and In-N-Out are one of the few things you never need to quiz staff about. Just skip the floats and shakes, which are made with dairy ice cream.
Allergy and other notes
Coke contains no milk, egg, gluten, nuts or soy ingredients. Diet Coke and Coke Zero contain aspartame, so they carry a phenylalanine warning. Always check the label if you have an allergy, as recipes vary by country.
Alternatives
If you'd rather avoid the big brands altogether, many smaller colas are vegan too. German brand Fritz-kola says all its drinks are vegan. For supermarket own-brand colas, check the label or look for a vegan mark. Our vegan drinks guide covers other sodas, energy drinks, beer and wine.
The bottom line
Coca-Cola is vegan, and Coca-Cola says so. Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, Cherry Coke, Fanta Orange and Sprite are vegan too. US cane-sugar bottles are a mild grey area because of possible bone-char sugar, and some vegans dislike the company's past links to animal testing. For anything beyond the core sodas, read the label.
