Vegan Options at Starbucks

THE VERDICTMost drinks, with swaps

Most Starbucks drinks can be made vegan. Choose oat, soy, almond or coconut milk (free in US and Canadian company-run stores since 7 November 2024), stick to syrups rather than sauces, and skip the whipped cream. The mocha sauce, most syrups and the Refreshers are vegan.

Not vegan in the US: the chai concentrate (honey), the pumpkin spice, white chocolate and caramel sauces, Frappuccino chips and whipped cream.

Starbucks is one of the easier chains to be vegan at, because most of the menu is milk plus flavor, and you control both. The trick is knowing that Starbucks has two kinds of flavoring. Syrups are thin and almost all vegan. Sauces are thick, and several contain dairy. Get that right, skip the whip, and you're most of the way there. We checked the US menu and current vegan guides in October 2026.

Plant milk is free now (in most places)

On 7 November 2024, Starbucks stopped charging extra for non-dairy milk in company-operated stores in the US and Canada. The options are oat, soy, almond and coconut. The announcement covered company-operated stores only, so licensed stores (such as some in airports and grocery stores) may differ.

Starbucks UK dropped its 40p plant milk charge in January 2022. We couldn't find an official statement for Ireland, so check the menu board.

How to order a vegan drink at Starbucks

  1. Pick the drink. Lattes, cappuccinos, Americanos, shaken espressos, cold brew, Refreshers and most Frappuccinos all work.
  2. Choose the milk. Oat, soy, almond or coconut. Oat is the most popular choice for lattes.
  3. Check the flavor. Syrup: fine. Sauce: ask which one. Avoid white mocha, caramel drizzle and US pumpkin.
  4. Say "no whip" on any Frappuccino, mocha or seasonal drink.
  5. Swap the topping. Ask for plain cinnamon instead of cinnamon dolce topping.
  6. Use the app. It lets you change every component and shows you what's in the drink.

Vegan as standard: the Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso and Iced Hazelnut Oatmilk Shaken Espresso need no changes at all.

Fall and seasonal drinks

The US Pumpkin Spice Latte can't be made vegan, because the pumpkin spice sauce itself contains dairy. Oat milk and no whip won't fix it. VegNews checked again in September 2026 and the US still hadn't adopted the dairy-free pumpkin sauce used in the UK and parts of Europe.

Vegan-friendly fall 2026 options in the US, according to VegNews:

That's based on Veganuary's UK guide from January 2026. Food ranges change often.

Ireland. We couldn't find a current vegan list for Starbucks in Ireland, and food ranges there may differ from the UK. Ask staff which food is labeled vegan, and check that the pumpkin sauce is the dairy-free version before ordering a PSL.

Allergy notes

Plant-milk drinks are made on the same bar as dairy drinks, with shared steam wands, blenders and shakers, so trace milk is possible. That's an allergy issue, not a vegan verdict changer.

Starbucks vs other chains

If you need a full meal rather than a drink and a bagel, Chipotle and Taco Bell are much easier. Panera is the closest café-style alternative with more vegan food.

The bottom line

Order any espresso drink with oat, soy, almond or coconut milk, flavor it with a syrup or the mocha sauce, and say no whip. Skip the chai, white mocha, caramel drizzle and the US Pumpkin Spice Latte. In the UK, the PSL is back on the table. See the vegan fast food guide for more chains.
