Vegan Options at Chick-fil-A

THE VERDICTSides, sauces and salads

Chick-fil-A has no vegan main, but the sides are solid. The waffle fries and hash browns are cooked in canola oil with no animal ingredients, and the Polynesian, barbecue and Sweet and Spicy Sriracha sauces are vegan. Salads work if you drop the chicken and cheese and pick a vinaigrette.

The buns contain dairy, the signature Chick-fil-A Sauce contains egg, and every dessert and shake is dairy.

Chick-fil-A is a chicken restaurant through and through, so you won't find a vegan sandwich here. What you will find is a better-than-average set of sides. The waffle fries are vegan, so are the hash browns, and several of the dipping sauces pass. With a little editing, the salads and the Cool Wrap can work too. We checked the menu and ingredient pages in October 2026.

Are Chick-fil-A waffle fries vegan?

Yes. Chick-fil-A's own ingredient page lists potatoes, canola oil, a starch and rice-flour coating, salt and leavening. There's nothing from an animal.

The recipe has wobbled a little. In late 2024 Chick-fil-A added pea starch to the coating to keep the fries crisp for longer. Fans complained loudly, and the company dropped it in early 2026. Either way, the fries stayed vegan.

Chick-fil-A cooks its chicken in peanut oil and its fries in canola oil, so the fries aren't sharing oil with the chicken. If cross-contact matters a lot to you, ask the team at your restaurant how their fryers are set up.

How to order a vegan salad or wrap

The salads are where you can turn sides into something closer to a meal. The trick is removing more than you'd think.

  • Market Salad: ask for no chicken and no blue cheese, and skip the granola. Choose the Light Balsamic Vinaigrette.
  • Spicy Southwest Salad: no chicken, no cheese and no creamy salsa dressing. The tortilla strips contain milk, so leave those off too. The Chili Lime Pepitas are vegan. Add Chili Lime Vinaigrette instead.
  • Cobb Salad: no chicken, cheese, bacon, egg or ranch. The crispy bell peppers are vegan.
  • Side salad: no cheese, with a vinaigrette.
  • Grilled Cool Wrap: no chicken, no cheese, and a vinaigrette instead of the creamy dressing. One older guide flagged L-cysteine in the flatbread, which can come from feathers. Chick-fil-A doesn't say where its comes from, so treat the wrap as a grey area.

What to say: "A Market Salad with no chicken, no cheese and no granola, with the Light Balsamic, please." Then add waffle fries and a Polynesian dip.

The Kale Crunch side

This little side is easy to miss and one of the better vegan picks. Chick-fil-A lists kale, green cabbage, roasted almonds and a dressing made with apple juice concentrate, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, oils, mustard seed and white wine. Nothing is plainly animal-derived. The white wine and the natural flavor are the only question marks (wine can be fined with animal products, and natural flavors aren't always plant-based). We call it Likely vegan.

Breakfast

Breakfast is the easiest meal at Chick-fil-A for vegans who don't mind a carb-heavy plate.

  • Hash browns: vegan, and good.
  • English muffin: listed as vegan by World of Vegan and PETA. Order it plain with jelly. The biscuits and the burrito tortillas aren't on any vegan list.
  • Fruit cup: vegan.
  • Hot coffee: vegan, black. There's no plant milk.

The breakfast bowls, burritos, biscuits and Chick-n-Minis all include chicken, egg, cheese or dairy in the dough.

Drinks

Drink Status

Iced tea, sweet or unsweet Vegan
Fountain sodas Vegan

The lemonade and sweet tea contain sugar, which most vegans are fine with.

What's not vegan at Chick-fil-A

  • Every sandwich. Even if you remove the chicken, the buns contain dairy.
  • Nuggets, strips, the spicy sandwich and the grilled chicken. The breading on the fried items also contains milk and egg.
  • Mac and cheese, cookies, brownies and every shake.
  • Chick-fil-A Sauce, ranch and honey-based sauces.

Chick-fil-A in the UK and Ireland

Chick-fil-A is having another go at the UK after a short-lived attempt in Reading in 2019. As of October 2026 there are two restaurants in Belfast, plus sites in Leeds (opened October 2025), Kingston in south-west London (March 2026) and Liverpool. Its first Scottish restaurant and first UK drive-thru, in Hamilton near Glasgow, was due to open on 29 October 2026. We couldn't find any Chick-fil-A in the Republic of Ireland.

Don't assume the UK menu matches the US one item for item. Recipes for fries, sauces and dressings can differ by country, and we couldn't find a published UK vegan list. Check the allergen information in the restaurant or app before ordering. Waffle fries and a vegan dip are the most likely bet. Like US branches, the Hamilton restaurant closes on Sundays, so plan around that.

Cross-contact and allergy notes

  • Shared kitchens: everything is prepared in a kitchen built around chicken. If that rules a place out for you, Chick-fil-A won't suit.
  • Peanut oil: the chicken is fried in peanut oil. The fries use canola oil, but tell staff about any allergy.
  • Gluten: the waffle fries contain no wheat in the published ingredient list. Fryer setups vary, so ask if you're coeliac.

Alternatives nearby

If you want a vegan burger rather than sides, Burger King sells the Impossible Whopper in the US. In-N-Out has a bun-and-veg Wish Burger and vegan fries. For something heartier, Chipotle and Taco Bell are the easiest US chains for a full vegan meal. Our vegan fast food guide compares 15 chains.

The bottom line

Chick-fil-A is a sides-and-sauces stop for vegans. Waffle fries with Polynesian or barbecue sauce, a Kale Crunch side and a lemonade make a decent snack. For a fuller meal, order a Market Salad with no chicken, cheese or granola and a vinaigrette. Skip the buns, the Chick-fil-A Sauce and anything sweet from the freezer.

FAQ

Are Chick-fil-A waffle fries vegan?
Yes. They're potatoes cooked in canola oil, with a light starch coating and salt. Chick-fil-A briefly added pea starch to the coating in late 2024 and removed it in early 2026; neither version contained animal ingredients.
Is Chick-fil-A Sauce vegan?
No. It's a mayo-style sauce made with egg. Barbecue, Polynesian, Sweet and Spicy Sriracha, ketchup and mustard are the vegan dipping options.
Is the Polynesian sauce vegan?
Yes. It's a sweet and sour sauce with no dairy or egg. It contains sugar, which some strict vegans avoid because some cane sugar is filtered with bone char.
Are Chick-fil-A hash browns vegan?
Yes. The breakfast hash browns are fried in canola oil and contain no animal ingredients.
Does Chick-fil-A have a vegan sandwich?
No. The buns contain dairy, and there's no plant-based patty. Chick-fil-A has tested a cauliflower sandwich in the past, but it was breaded with egg and served on the same buns.
Is the Kale Crunch side vegan?
By its published ingredients it looks vegan: kale, cabbage, almonds and a maple and apple cider vinaigrette. The dressing lists white wine and natural flavor, so we call it likely vegan rather than certain.
Does Chick-fil-A have plant milk?
No. Hot coffee is fine served black, but the iced coffees, Frosted drinks and milkshakes are all made with dairy.
Is there a Chick-fil-A in Ireland?
There are two restaurants in Belfast, Northern Ireland. We couldn't find any in the Republic of Ireland as of October 2026.
